Pygmalion

The way people speak says a lot about themselves. This stays true in the book Pygmalion. In Pygmalion, Higgins studied each person's speech, and could tell you a wealth of information about the person. Speech is a big part in everybody's life. I will talk about how speech deals with class distinction and in some cases how it affects relationships.
Class distinction says a lot about a person. It defines you and who you are. In the book Pygmalion, class distinction plays a major role. In the beginning, Liza could not speak very well. At the time, she was also in the lower class. Liza sold flowers, and she wanted to have her own shop. There was one thing holding her back. Her speech was a major setback. The only way she could get the shop was to improve her dialect. She worked with Higgins, and did improve her speech. She was no longer viewed as lower class once she did. This relates to today because people still, and always will, view you on your dialect. You can not be a lawyer and go to court talking in slang. You need to have proper grammar and be understood clearly.
Higgins and Liza had a relationship that was like a roller coaster. It had its ups and downs. In the beginning, Higgins could speak properly and Liza could not. This is where their whole relationship started. Higgins offered to help Liza and teach her how to improve her dialect. Liza started falling for Higgins, but he never really showed her that he liked her. During the book, they became good friends, but nothing more than that. They ended up just being friends, and everybody was happy.
In ways Pygmalion does relate to the times of today. Speech is a big part, and will always be a big part in society. Your dialect stays with you forever. It is what others view you by. The book Pygmalion shows how important it is, and how your grammar can affect a person in many different ways.
